Domestic Violence Awareness, and Why it is Important

By LaMinda Villarreal, LMSW HCFS

October is widely recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Established in 1989, this movement is structured to mourn the lives lost to domestic violence (DV), celebrate the survivors, and educate and advocate for the cause. Raising DV awareness in communities is a critical step in stopping the cycle of abuse.

DV awareness is so pertinent because it highlights a persistent and prevalent, often secret, threat that plagues our communities. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. DV is typically thought to be physical abuse, however it also includes emotional abuse, psychological abuse, and financial control. The realization that not all abuse leaves bruises is an important first step in understanding how this hidden trauma can affect so many individuals.

Bringing public awareness to this cause is necessary on so many levels. By educating the community on red flags, it helps individuals recognize the warning signs of abuse in their relationships and in the relationships around them. It also aids in the destigmatization of shame and guilt that survivors often feel. Additionally, education on healthy relationships and open communication can help stop violence before it starts. In normalizing conversations surrounding DV, we can empower the men and women struggling in these situations to seek the assistance they deserve and help break the cycle of abuse.

October of 2025 was the kickoff of a new and exciting tradition in Boerne. HCFS was proud to partner with the Victim Services Division of the Kendall County Criminal District Attorney’s Office and the Kendall County Women’s Shelter to host this powerful event and hopefully begin a meaningful dialogue in our community. We aim to continue the tradition, united, clad in purple, and walking the mile each October, strengthening and celebrating survivors of DV.
